There are many varieties of Weigela and all feature arching stems, which are covered in pink or red bell-shaped flowers in late spring to early summer. They are a traditional favorite for background plants and shrub borders. In more recent years, there have been many new varieties emerge on the market, features bright foliage in shades of gold, green, white and rose, extending the seasonal interest. Size ranges from large 6-foot shrubs down to compact varieties that can easily be planted with perennials. Plant in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun, and provide adequate water.
