Cryptomerias are coniferous, needleleaf evergreen with a large range of sizes and growth habits. Light green spring growth darkens to a deep black-green color as it matures. Cryptomerias have attractive visible, light brown cones. Large types such as Yoshino are good alternatives for Leyland Cypress trees, and work well planted as large screen trees (mature size is 30-40 feet tall and 20-30 feet wide). Although Yoshino Cryptomerias have low branching naturally, they can be limbed up to allow for underplantings. Some varieties of Cryptomeria, such as Yoshino, turn an attractive bronze color in the winter and although they are evergreen, they do shed intermittently. There are also small growing Cryptomerias such as Black Dragon, which grows to 8 feet tall and 4 feet wide; these types work well in containers as well as landscape beds.
