Top 5 Ways to Use Pumpkins in Your Fall Decor

Now that the weather is more jeans and flannel than shorts and tanks, it’s time to consider renovating your decor to a more seasonally appropriate fall look!  One easy to to instantly switch from a summer look to cozy autumn vibe is pumpkins, gourds, cornstalks and straw bales.

Picking Your Pumpkins

We have gotten our pumpkins from the same local farmer for years! We send in our order, they pick them, and we get them within a day or so… unless you go to a pumpkin patch or grow your own, our pumpkins are as fresh as it gets. No matter where you get your pumpkins, look them over carefully and avoid ones with soft spots, or breaks (unless they are healed over).

It’s helpful to know what kind of pumpkin you are getting. An example would be Fairy Tales; they are green when not completely ripe, and turn a pale orange when ripe. We often get ours in green since everyone loves a green, orange and white pumpkin stack! But the green may not stay green all season. If you want a pumpkin that says green, consider Marina de Chio or Blue Doll.

Keep reading for some of our favorite ways to incorporate pumpkins into your decor!

1 Pumpkin Stacks

You can’t go wrong with these!  There are about 5 pumpkins that work the best, due to them being more flat and reliably stackable. Flat White Boer, the name says it all on this one. The second most popular is likely the Cinderella. This the darker orange flat one, although some years they are more round.  Next in popularity is the Fairy Tale, mentioned above, which is dark green until it ripens. Our newest favorite is Marina de Chio, which is a mid-green color with tons of bumps all over; the texture is amazing.  Lastly, Blue Doll; this one isn’t as flat, it has some height to it.

Three stacked pumpkins—orange, white, and green—surrounded by colorful flowers, grasses, and foliage. A wooden playset is visible in the background, suggesting a lively autumn garden scene. A stack of colorful pumpkins, including orange, white, green, and tan, sits on a wooden table outdoors with leafy plants and trees in the background under a clear blue sky. Several colorful pumpkins are stacked in towers on a wooden surface, surrounded by vibrant green plants and foliage, with tall trees in the background under a blue sky. Stacked pumpkins of various colors—green, white, orange, and tan—are displayed outdoors on wooden tables, with more pumpkins blurred in the background amid trees in daylight.

2 Pumpkin Centerpieces

All it takes is a container (or table!), small pumpkins and mini pumpkins plus moss if you are feeling fancy, and presto! A seasonal centerpiece. Mix in succulents, ivy and pine cones to add more texture and visual interest. Candles would make a good addition too.

3 Add Pumpkins to Your Planters

Looking to skip the fall flowers and move right to winter hardy ones?  No worries; just add a pumpkin or two and instantly give the planter fall feels! Pop them out as the season progresses, the pansies will fill in the gaps just fine.

5 Flower Arrangements in Pumpkins

We love this, everything about it! It’s such a seasonal celebration and the options are endless, from the pumpkin choice to the flowers themselves. We like this detailed instructional post from Ella Claire Inspired. There are a lot of option on HOW to make this happen too; floral foam in hollowed out pumpkin, a vase, a flower frog… even using floral foam on top of a pumpkin so you can keep the pumpkin intact and use again another time.
