This genus contains over 80 species of plants; most are deciduous. Spireas feature small, profuse blooms in shades of white, pink, yellow and purple that appear in spring or summer. Several varieties also display eye-catching lime green, blue green or gold foliage. There are species that bloom on current years’ growth (cut back as buds swell in the spring) and others that bloom on last years’ growth (prune after blooms fade). Plant form, size and bloom color vary greatly. Spireas work well planted in mass plantings, as hedges and as accent plants in landscapes.
