Ornamental Cabbage, Kale and Greens!

Looking for some texture and color contrast for your pots this fall and winter? Does your container need some height? Wanting a little something extra to accent your pansy planting?  Ornamental cabbage (also called flowering cabbage), kale, Swiss chard and mustard may be your answer!

Choose from lavender colored leaves (Coral Queen shown above in pot with yellow mum) to dark purple with a green vein (Big Red ornamental mustard shown above in pot with creeping jenny). Check out the deeply serrated leaves of the Peacock series of kale, available in both white and purple leaved varieties (white is shown below next to croton).  Also shown below is the gently ruffled Osaka series (it’s the plant under the stone start in the image below).

These are just a few of the many varieties we currently have on hand and the leaf colors just get more vibrant as the cool weather arrives.  Check our the deep purple center of Glamour Red kale below. This bright beauty was chosen as an Arkansas Diamond plant selection because of its success in Arkanasas gardens and because of its outstanding vibrancy and contrast between the outer green glossy leaves and the center leaf color.

These are ornamental and chosen for leaf color and shape; they are much more bitter than culinary cabbage and kale. All of these stand out in containers and also, make quite the statement planted in mass in landscape beds. They like cool weather and will need to be pulled up and replaced with warm season annuals next spring, as with other cool season annuals like pansies and violas. Shop our tables soon for the best selection; everyone has a favorite and they go fast!
